What is a Working Cat Program?

The Humane Society of Cambria County has established a Working Cat Program to help the cats of the community, as well as the members of the community that could benefit from the rewards of owning a working cat. 

The purpose of our Working Cat Program (WCP) is to find safe places for cats that are not suitable for in-home living. Working cats are feral or exhibit feral-like behaviors, and typically prefer the company of other animals over the company of people. The cats inducted into the WCP have been vetted, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated; they have been “ear tipped” to distinguish their spay/neuter status.

What do working cats do?

WCP cats should be used as “rodent managers” and cat-to-cat companions for other feral cats. Their needs are minimal, consisting of shelter in a permanent building and daily food and water. We recommend an initial confinement period of your new WCP cat for 2 to 3 weeks to help them become accustomed to their new home. Suitable new homes will be located away from busy roadways and may include barns, stables, warehouses, sheds, businesses, garages, breweries or wineries, hardware stores, factories, greenhouses or nurseries.

Working cats are not!

Working cats do not include:

Geriatric Cats
Declawed Cats
Sick Cats (Feline Leukemia, FIV, etc.)

How to obtain a working cat

Working cats will be available at our shelter located at 743 Galleria Drive Extension.

There is no fee for a working cat! We simply ask that you provide all working cats with shelter, food, and water as well as veterinary care when it is needed.
